Or rather, away from Cardiff, on order of Jack, and Rhys had decided to take advantage of it and plan a weekend away. Maybe not the best timing, but she appreciated the gesture. Just a day or three really, just seeing some different skies (not that she never saw anything but Cardiff, she had even been to the Himalayas), a breath of other air. Right now, Rhys was still at the hotel, sleeping in, but she hadn't been able to sleep for that long, being used to waking up at the weirdest hours because of Torchwood business, so no it was maybe eight in the morning, the city bustling with people traveling to their jobs, the Underground filled to the brim. It was freezing, but the sun was, after the winter months, cautiously starting to shine again. She sat on the edge of the fountain at Piccadilly circus, watching the people walk by, her face in the sun, mulling over what had happened some weeks ago. It was still surreal.
Little had they known that, nearly a year ago, that when John Hart had said he had found Gray, that Jack's little brother cherished such resentment toward his brother. So much even, that he had nearly destroyed the whole of Cardiff, and had uncomfortably close to wiping out the entire Torchwood Three team. Sure enough, three of them were still alive, but it had cost Tosh her life, and Owen his life, or undeath, or whatever they were to call what he had had.

"It's always news when Torchwood comes to town," Martha said, announcing her presence. "Hello, Gwen. Don't worry, I managed to convince them not arrest you." Her tone was that of amusement, but it had been a minor concern of UNIT's. The two organisations hadn't had the most... congenial of pasts and while Jack's relationship with the Doctor kept the Cardiff branch outside of UNIT's interests, they tended to get jumpy when Torchwood and London got used in the same sentence.
Martha couldn't help but feel sympathy for that position, given what she'd read in the file and what the Doctor had hinted had happened at Canary Wharf. Her cousin, however, was still no reason to take it out on Gwen.

She was shocked out of her silent reverie at the sound of a familiar voice, and an involuntary, though slightly less wide than normally, smile appeared on her freckled face. Last time Gwen had seen the dark girl was some months before, after a short period of Martha staying in Cardiff, at least, until Owen had been fit enough again to resume work. It had been only a few days, but she had liked her, thinking it at least a bit of a shame she had left to work for UNIT (the ones with the red caps, Gwen had to keep reminding herself), and she hadn't seen the other woman since, except for briefly at Tosh' and Owen's funerals, when they hadn't had much chance to talk. Her smile grew a little wider, and a little more genuine at the quip about not getting arrested. It wasn't really something she had done that would get her arrested by UNIT, but more because of the relationship between the two organisations. She, personally, had had little to do with it, as had Torchwood Three, but the overreaction of UNIT over Torchwood was more because of what had happened in London anyway.
"Good to see you, Martha." Gwen hopped of the edge of the fountain, walking towards the other, "Oh, you know me. Wouldn't dream of doing anything to offend UNIT," she grinned. "And no news to upset them either, just out sightseeing abroad." She stood for a moment, uncertain what to say next, looking around. It was sort of weird how you could be in a city this size, and still run into one person you knew there, and who probably had the same irregular working hours as you did, all over the world. "So how are you?"

"Oh, you know me. Wouldn't dream of doing anything to offend UNIT... And no news to upset them either, just out sightseeing abroad... So how are you?" Martha smiled. She really didn't have to fight all that hard. UNIT disapproved of Torchwood Three more than anything else. "A lot of that going around," she remarked, about the sightseeing. "...Busy," she replied, resisting the impulse to splurge all that's happened recently on top of Gwen, who was only trying to make polite conversation. "It's good to know that even Torchwood lets you get a holiday once in a while."

Gwen looked around the Circus, people still bustling by, black cabs and buses stuck in traffic already, and nodded at Martha. Lots of tourists from all over the world came to see London, and since a couple of years back, not just 'tourists' from this world. She hadn't believed it when she was still with the police, rather believing it was some sort of biological terrorism, hallucinogenics in the water, because, really, aliens? No way those were real. How she had learned. She smiled at Martha, knowing the feeling. "Busy hm? I thought London was alienfree for the moment?" She grinned, knowing full well a city that size probably never would be entirely alienfree, and she wondered briefly whether Weevils lived in London as well. In Cardiff they were a right infestation, and there was always at least one locked up in the cells in the Hub.
As Martha said it was good to know Torchwood let them go on holidays, her face clouded over for a moment. It was not easy forgetting she wasn't exactly taking a planned holiday, but more a forced one. It was still kind of hard to explain, so she merely shrugged, non committally. She thought for a moment, before smiling the smile she usually had had when trying to reassure people that really nothing was wrong, one she had used often when still in the police, trying to make some small talk. "UNIT doesn't give you much time off then? Cause I must admit it's kind of weird, in a big bustling town, millions of people, and bumping in perhaps the only person you know there!"

"Busy hm? I thought London was alienfree for the moment?" Martha grinned. "Oh, London is a 'happening' kind of town, didn't you know?" "UNIT doesn't give you much time off then? Cause I must admit it's kind of weird, in a big bustling town, millions of people, and bumping in perhaps the only person you know there!" Martha raised her hands. "Oh, it's a fair cop! You caught me! I've been secretly stalking you!" she grinned. She shrugged. "It's not a coincidence, I heard down the wire, so to speak, that you were here, I was also here, so!"
